DIY tips for making a Lantern?

I want to make two matching lamps for a console table. Looking to save some cash I went to Target and bought two large black cylinder shaped candle holders that have a design cut out on them. They're made of some sort of metal, or tin. Anyway, I want to make them into lanterns.I bought a kit that will allow me to attach a light bulb outlet at the bottom where the candle would go. I want to add a sheet of white paper to contrast with the black design on the latern. My question is, what kind of material can I use to line the inside of the cylinder that is heat resistant? Also, what watt bulb is best for these type of lanterns? I would hate to set my house on fire after so much hard work.
