Mormons, why do you have to earn Godhood? Why aren't you already "gods"?

We're not Gods yet because we're here on this earthly plane trying to exist and grow. When and if we get to the Celestial Kingdom, there is an eternity of learning and growing to do before that happens and even then it might not. Won't know until we get there.
